Rajiv with his son Asha Fair Trade Artisan

Artisan's Story
Stone Handicraft business started by Rajeev Verma’s father in 1976 and Rajeev joined his father in their family firm in 1986. Rajeev has completed a Bachelor’s degree in Arts but ultimately ended up joining his father’s trade. His father was already working with Asha when he joined and he has come a long way since then.

At Rajiv’s unit, the artisans make intricately carved vases, boxes, and candle holders out of marble, while a few work on beautifully detailed embroidered boxes and purses. Where the stonework is concerned, only the men carry out the work.

A few years into joining the firm disaster struck. His father, who was also his mentor, passed away suddenly leaving Rajeev and the business in a shambles. The loss of his father left him devastated.

Through all his hardship, Rajeev is still a strong advocate for Fair Trade and follows the 10 principles to the letter. For Rajeev, Fair Trade is ensuring that there is a proper, clean working environment for his artisans and that they all receive their fair share, on time. He also strongly objects to child labour.
